No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
