Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
